Balkan music has a way of stirring the soul

Balkan music has a way of stirring the soul, and for Signe Førre, it has always held a special place in her heart. From a young age, the intricate melodies and pulsating rhythms of Eastern Europe captivated her, weaving themselves into the fabric of her musical consciousness.

Signe’s love affair with Balkan music began through family holidays in Turkey and an extensive series of travels to Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. These experiences ignited a deep fascination with Eastern European music, culture, and language. What truly enchanted her was the warmth and open-heartedness she encountered along the way—the curiosity and inclusiveness of the people in the Balkans, which resonated deeply with the young bassist and rooted her connection to this rich cultural tradition.

The passion, raw emotion, and intricate rhythmic structures that define the music of the Balkan Peninsula have inspired Signe to embark on a unique musical journey—one that blends these powerful elements with the distinctive sounds of her native Norway. Out of this cross-cultural fusion, a striking new sound emerges, with Signe leading a dynamic quartet that seamlessly navigates a wide array of musical styles. With her hauntingly beautiful voice, she performs songs in Serbian, Bulgarian, Bosnian, and Turkish, while grounding the music with the deep, resonant tones of her 19th century double bass, creating a commanding groove that forms the backbone of each piece. Signe’s ensemble is as diverse as the music itself.

Jo Asgeir Lies accordion adds layers of texture and depth, while Kåre Opheim on drums brings a driving energy and intricate rhythms. Torbjørn Økland’s touch on strings further enriches the soundscape, making for a vibrant and solid foundation that supports Signe’s compositions and arrangements. Together, they craft a sound that is both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly innovative.

The reception to this cultural blend has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly from audiences in the Balkan region, where Signe’s heartfelt connection to the music resonates deeply. As a result, her work has garnered international attention, with a German booking agency already planning tours in Munich and Nuremberg. Fagert is more than just an album—it’s a heartfelt love letter to the Balkans, a tribute to musical heritage, and a celebration of inclusion and community. Crafted by Signe Førre, hailing from the scenic town of Voss, it reflects her deep respect for both her Norwegian roots and the rich cultural traditions that have inspired her along the way. This highly anticipated release will be available on vinyl and digital platforms, allowing listeners to experience the beauty and complexity of Signe’s unique musical vision.
