Fifteen hours of nonstop fiddling in a camping bus

Fifteen hours of nonstop fiddling in a camping bus at Ransäterstämman 2009 gave us the idea of making a good, old-fashioned, unvarnished duo album. We each had a lot of old recordings, and a shoebox full of cassettes found in the attic at Tamneset also turned out to contain a lot of great tunes.

We have each been raised in distinct traditions, Ole Jørgen in Brekken and Olav in the Glåmos tradition, and on this album we hope to exhibit a little of the variety in the fiddle music from the Røros area. Fiddlers in the Røros area had less contact in the past, which led to the development of several different playing styles around Aursundsjøen.

This has been made clear in our examination of old recordings. We have found several tunes and tune forms which are less common today, but of course some of our old favourites are also included.

On this recording you will hear solo fiddling, the old harmony form called groft og grant (in which a harmony line is played one octave below the melody line), and the somewhat newer harmony form which consists of a second voice. In addition, we are grateful for Olav Nyhus’s contributions on zither and song. Enjoy!
